Photo of the the Day — Day 201
As loyal followers of my photoblog know, S. is an opera singer, and as a dramatic soprano, she specializes in Wagner. Each January, there is a vocal competition in New York hosted by the Liederkranz Foundation (http://www.liederkranzny.org/index.html), and they have a special category for Wagnerians. Unfortunately, S. has been battling a sinus and inner ear infection for the past couple of weeks, so she was not at the top of her game; nonetheless, she sang exceedingly well. The level of competition is incredibly high, and she wasn’t one of the winners, but I’m very proud of her for performing so well under truly challenging conditions.
In the time since I met S., she has introduced me to the world of opera singers, and it’s hard to describe how difficult that life is. They work unbelievably hard to train their voices, to learn to sing in foreign languages, to act, and they learn to do it perfectly over and over again, often under intense scrutiny. I admire her unwavering dedication to her art, her iron-like discipline, and her abundance of talent. She is an inspiration to me, and it’s one of the reasons why I asked her to be my wife.
Today’s photos of the day include scenes from the practice room lobby and the practice room that S. used to warm up before the competition, a bust of Wagner in the lobby of the Liederkranz Foundation, and a shot of S. in front of the Foundation building after she sang.
